THE BELOW are the principal sources in print and in manuscript form drawn upon in preparing this work. They have been selected from the vast literature dealing with World War II as the ones most likely to be of interest and of help to those who seek to improve current administration by knowledge of the past. Bibliography
The Bibliography is segregated in two categories: In the first, designated as General Bibliography,k have been placed the titles dealing with the broader aspects of naval administration. Many additional items might have been included in that list. The General Bibliography is followed by Chapter Bibliographies (and one covering the Epilogue) listing published material and material in typescript and manuscript form containing information more particularly pertinent to the subjects dealt with in the respective chapters. Some items have been entered in both the General and the Chapter Bibliographies.
More than 300 narrative histories have been written, covering the activities of the various components of the Naval Establishment during World War II. Most of these are in typescript form, on file in the Naval History Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Navy Department or in the History Divisions of the Coast Guard and Marine Corps Headquarters. Information as to the location of items when not definitely stated may be obtained from the History Division of the Navy Department. The location may change as time goes on.
Two more-or-less complete bibliographies of the narrative histories are included on HyperWar: Guide to United States Naval Administrative Histories of World War II.
Partial Checklist of World War II Histories and Historical Reports in the U.S. Naval History DivisionAny of these which have been partially or completely posted on HyperWar will be linked in the following Bibliography and the footnotes in the individual chapters. Links to works not yet included will point to the appropriate entries in the above bibliographies; which will, in turn, link to the individual histories as they are completed.
