to the

USS LSM(R) 188

for participation in the following operation:
The Okinawa Operation on March 29, 1495, for services as set forth in the following

CITATION:

"For outstanding heroism in action against the enemy Japanese aircraft. While on an aggressive patrol off Okinawa, she engaged several enemy aircraft. The second plane of the attack was heavily hit and set on fire. The plane exploded and parts of the plane and the bomb hit the ship and exploded, causing heavy personnel casualties and material damage in which fifteen of the crew were killed or missing, and thirty-two wounded in action out of a total complement of eighty-three. Her heroic crew continued to fight the ship, repulsing further air attacks and displaying conspicuous gallantry in controlling damage, bringing the ship safely to port. Her courageous determination and effort were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service."
